AI Assistants

Ask an AI assistant about your journal

Eating Buddy can be linked to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants that support the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Once linked, you can ask the assistant about what you logged, in your own words:

  • “What did I eat yesterday?”
  • “Which foods do I eat most often?”
  • “Do I snack more after short nights?”
  • “How much water do I drink on an average day?”
  • “How was my mood on the days I worked out?”

The assistant reads your journal and answers from it. It describes what your journal shows; it does not give diet plans or medical advice, and it cannot change or delete anything.

Before you start

  • Eating Buddy on your phone with Premium, which stores your journal on our server so an assistant can reach it.
  • A Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini account.

Connect Claude

Eating Buddy is listed in the Claude connector directory.

  1. In Claude open Settings → Connectors, find Eating Buddy and choose Connect.
  2. A page opens with a six-digit code.
  3. On your phone, open Eating Buddy, go to Settings → AI Assistants → Enter code, type the code and approve.
  4. The page continues on its own and sends you back to Claude. You are connected.

Connect ChatGPT

Eating Buddy is awaiting approval in the ChatGPT plugin directory, so you will not find it by searching there yet. As a temporary workaround you can add the MCP server manually, which creates a personal plugin. This needs a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise plan and is done from ChatGPT on the web. Once Eating Buddy is listed, you will be able to install it from the directory like any other plugin.

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins in the sidebar, select the + button, then Add custom MCP server. If you do not see that option, open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode and try again.

  2. Name it Eating Buddy and paste this as the server URL:

    https://tools.eatingbuddy.app/mcp

Choose OAuth as the authentication, read the risk warning and confirm.

  3. A page opens in your browser with a six-digit code.

  4. On your phone, open Eating Buddy, go to Settings → AI Assistants → Enter code, type the code and approve.

  5. The page continues on its own and sends you back to ChatGPT. Choose Create as a plugin.

  6. Open the new plugin under Personal plugins and install it. You are connected. In a chat, type @Eating Buddy to ask about your journal.

Connect Gemini

Gemini accepts custom apps from the web app only; once added, the app also shows up in Gemini on your phone. Google is rolling custom apps out gradually: they need a personal Google account with Keep Activity turned on, and they may not be available in every country or language yet. If you do not see Custom apps in your settings, your account does not have them yet.

  1. On a computer open gemini.google.com, then Settings → Connected Apps. Under Custom apps choose Add a custom app and paste this address:

    https://tools.eatingbuddy.app/mcp

    Then continue.

  2. A page opens with a six-digit code.

  3. On your phone, open Eating Buddy, go to Settings → AI Assistants → Enter code, type the code and approve.

  4. The page continues on its own and sends you back to Gemini. You are connected. In a chat, type @ and pick Eating Buddy to make sure Gemini uses it for your question.

Other assistants

Any MCP client that supports OAuth can connect to this address:

https://tools.eatingbuddy.app/mcp

The pairing works the same way: the client opens the code page, you approve in the app. In Claude Code, for example:

claude mcp add --transport http eatingbuddy https://tools.eatingbuddy.app/mcp

What the assistant can see

Only your own journal, and only the data stored on our server: meals and the foods in them, descriptions of meal photos (not the photos themselves), drinks and water, check-ins, workouts, sleep, moods, challenges, and your lists of tags and reasons. It sees nothing else, and it cannot see other people’s data.

Each request the assistant makes is logged on our side with the tool it called and the query it ran, never with what you said to the assistant. What the assistant does with the data it reads is governed by its vendor’s privacy policy. Details are in the Privacy Policy .

In Eating Buddy, open Settings → AI Assistants. Every linked assistant is listed; tap one to see when it was connected and last used, then choose Unlink. Access stops immediately. You can also disconnect from the assistant’s side. A link that is not used for 90 days expires by itself.

Only approve codes you see in your own assistant. Whoever’s code you approve gets access to your journal.
